Description
"Autumn Stream" White Pine Hollow State Preserve is located in the Paleozoic Plateau landform region and contains rugged landscape with features like steep rock bluffs, rock outcrops, cliffs, and caves. A deep valley of Pine Hollow Creek and a narrow upland ridge called the "hogsback" also appear on the preserve. There is a large variety of plant and animal life on the preserve, including more than 500 species of vascular plants and 100 species of bryophytes. The dry, rolling upland forests are occupied with white and red oak and sugar maple and basswood survive on the steep, moist slopes. Trees like box elder and silver maple grow in the floodplain valleys and the cliff faces house various types of fern. Rare snail species are also known to habituate the algific slopes. Flowers like bloodroot and hepatica bloom in March and May and June bring blooms like Virginia waterleaf and wild lily-of-the-valley. Fall welcomes flowers like purple joe-pye-weed and fall coralroot orchid. Around 90 bird species live on the preserve along with six species of bats.
