24000 Shutter Clicks later

24000 Shutter Clicks later

A short letter to my local paper.

Did not want to post direct to your wall. Last year you published a couple of photos of some Bald Eagles I took. Since then I have amassed over 24,000 clicks of the shutter with the majority taken within a 25 mile radius of Bristow. Thought I would share a short video clip of some of these shot all taken from Considine to Big Marsh. I have traveled the back roads of Butler County countless times and never grow tired of the nature that surrounds us. I wonder how many take the time to see the animals we share this planet with. https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=607085459384984

On the road again

April 19th, 2013

On the road again

My son and I will be going on the road again tomorrow, this time we will be covering Howard, Mitchell, and Floyd Counties in Iowa. Last weekend we traveled Butler and Hardin Counties. Last weekend covered 130 miles of travel on back roads tomorrow will cover over 200 miles. We will be visiting an old mill on the Upper Iowa River and a small hydro-electric dam in Mitchell. Stay in touch and see what we see later tomorrow. Hope you enjoy my Iowa travels.

American Bald Eagles

American Bald Eagles

When people think of American Bald Eagles few would think of Iowa. What a great success story these majestic birds are. We now have 3 breeding pairs within 20 miles of our house. Never before have I seen as many as this year. Their populations are strong and I can find them anywhere I go now. It appears Iowa climate suits them just fine and I could not be more than pleased to see them living here and not just migrating north to Minnesota. If you get a chance take a look at my Eagle gallery and keep an eye out for more fantastic shots to come.

Winter Scenery

Winter Scenery

Just finished traveling 180 miles on winter roads to capture some winter scenery. Winter scenes are some of the prettiest and hardest to shoot, due to extreme cold and keeping the lens from fogging over. The main focus of my trip was to capture the Old Motor Mill historic site near Elkader Iowa. They had just finished restoring the bridge across the Turkey river after it being gone for 20 years. The project cost a cool million to complete. They just had a recent snow fall of 12" so the ground was nice and white and clean looking.

If you get a chance stop by my pages and see what we saw on our trip. There are even some old barns I shot along the way. Happy Holidays to all of you and yours.

Miles driven pursuing that great shot

Miles driven pursuing that great shot

I live in NE Iowa and work as a senior designer at a hydraulics manufacturer. Photographing old buildings in my area and other places I visit is a priority before they are gone for ever. I have found in my 30 years of snapping photos these are the pictures that intrigue me most. It is a place in history and my passion to record those places before they disappear.

Along those lines this leads me what to charge for my pictures. You know I have driven over 800 miles the past month looking for those old run-down Iowa buildings. Up and down the back roads of my county with my 16 year old son riding beside me. Slamming on the brakes to get that quick shot of wildlife we may stumble upon. Good thing for seat belts! Snapping countless images of barns and abandoned farms. I have only posted what I feel are my better shots but maybe I should post most of them and let the shopper decide. My favorites might not be someone's favorite.

We have seen many new places even after living here 16 years I never ran around the county that much, opting to stay on hard surface roads, Been babying my Mitsubishi Eclipse trying to keep it clean of dust and free from rust. Well my car like me is getting older and time to drive those roads in search of the great shot. I will continue to seek shots and reach out further and further finding those old deserted farms and long gone town sites and who knows what I may find along the way. Not to mention the history you can learn by doing the research before you take off.

So what to charge and be fair? I have just updated my prices to lower than most listed on Fine Art, it is my goal to share these images at affordable prices, while making money to offset my costs such as gasoline, camera wear etc. I am not about making a living here just about sharing images others would not be able to photograph for themselves.
